GOAL: This course focuses on selecting, analyzing, adapting, and preparing worthwhile literature and speeches for public performance and competition.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this unit of study, the student will:
Oral Interpretation Events
(1) Distinguish the similarities and differences between oral interpretation and public speaking and acting.
(2) Define common types of interpretation.
(3) Recognize, analyze and select (cut) worthwhile forms of literature.
(4) Utilize the elements of audience analysis in choosing material.
(5) Create an introduction.
(6) Practice the technical skills, incorporating appropriate vocal and physical techniques, for interpretation delivery.
(7) Evaluate oral interpretation presentations.
Debate
(1) Gain command of the fundamental processes of argumentation and debate.
(2) Demonstrate techniques with methods of research.
(3) Improve critically and analytical thinking skills.
(4) Demonstrate effective oral communication skills to increase self-confidence.
(5) Increase knowledge and understanding of political and social issues.
(6) Create and organize debate materials and construct speeches.
(7) Evaluate debates and speech presentations.
Both
(1) Demonstrate mastery of these techniques necessary to communicate complete, accurate, and rich meaning from the printed page in actual public presentations.
(2) Know and follow MSHSAA oral rules and regulations, for competition.
(3) Practice appropriate tournament protocol and ethics in a team environment.
COURSE OVERVIEW: During the course of this class students will learn the fundamentals of their craft. Students will select and begin construction of their event in preparation for
tournament. Students will practice the event. The competitive season ends (for most students) in March. Students will then work on researching and acquiring materials for next school year. We will also work on mock trial and student congress.
