3. Invent, develop and portray characters and relationships.

Requirements
Students will be required to do both performance and written work in this course.
A. PLAY READING REPORTS: Students will be required to read one full length play PER SEMESTER. Plays are available either in the classroom or the library. Ms. Sloan must approve the play prior to completion of the report. Once a play has been approved and read, then a report must be completed and turned in for credit to be awarded.
B. LIVE PERFORMANCE CRITIQUES: Students will be required to observe one LIVE performance this semester and give a written response/critique of the performance. There are frequent opportunities to see productions throughout the semester. For additional information look at the bulletin board, or see Mrs. Sloan Included with the critique must be the ticket stub, program or specific proof of attendance.
C. PERFORMANCE: Specific performances will be necessary for fifty percent of the student’s grade. Students will be give notice before the performance will take place. There will be sign-up sheets posted to sign-up for a specific time. Students are expected to perform on the date assigned to them. If a student is absent the day of performance, then they will be expected to make-up that performance the day of their return. There will be no exceptions unless authorized by Mrs. Sloan. During each performance unit you will be given several sessions of rehearsal time and you will be awarded participation points for each session. Time not used for rehearsal during the rehearsal time allotted will not only lower your grade, but may force shorter rehearsal time for that specific assignment.
D. OUTSIDE PERFROMANCE: Students will be involved in two productions that take place outside of school. Students must be in attendance on those days. These dates will be given in advance along with a rehearsal schedule. Students must maintain passing grades in all classes in order to attend these events.
Extra Credit
Extra credit is available. Students may see additional performances of productions in the area. To receive this credit, you must complete an additional critique with proof of attendance to the performance. The critique must be turned in within two weeks of the performance date on the ticket stub or program. Also, a minimum of 10 hours participation in any production here or in the community, (church drama, community theatre, etc.) can be used for extra credit. If participation occurs outside of CHS, proof must be provided of participation in the production.
Extra credit cannot replace a missed performance.
Participation & Attendance
The opportunity to learn about Drama can only be truly successful when active participation is present. Participation in this class is of the highest priority. Everyone in this class must be open and willing to attempt every activity. To participate fully in this class, you must be in attendance everyday. You cannot perform, participate and learn if you are not here. It will be difficult to pass this course if you are not here on a daily basis.
Make-Up Work
Performance work that is missed must be made up the day the student returns to class. It is the student’s responsibility to request work missed and to turn it in.
Summary
This will be a busy semester for you in this class. All I ask is that you be open to all activities and not be afraid to show your abilities. All people have the ability to do something in all areas of theatre. Remember that this is an elective course and that you chose to take this class. Participation is the key to success in this course. If you participate in all activities and give to the best of your abilities, then you will not have trouble passing this course. For some of you this course may be a difficult one. For others, the required activities and assignments may appear rather easy. I understand the interest level and ability may vary greatly in a course such as this. For this reason, much of the final grade shall be placed on the level of improvement that I observe. In others you will be graded on YOUR individual performance and not compared to someone else. I ask only that you participate in the activities we do here, no matter how difficult they may seem. No matter what the occasion, NEGATIVE thoughts and words are not needed in a course such as this. Every person in this room will be opening themselves up for a public performance and need every ounce of encouragement they can get. Remember: as you give, so shall you receive. Encouraging each other will make your performance that much easier.
